Fun, indiscretion and “dad dancing” at the Motor Trader Awards

The Motor Trader awards were attended by a couple of our insiders on Wednesday night, and it certainly seems a good night was had by almost all. The sound of ssshing became quite tiresome as Ray Stubbs tried manfully to control a fairly good natured but large and pretty inebriated crowd.

The awards were handed out like confetti and the people who won them all seemed pretty pleased with themselves, and the nearly £10k raised for the BEN charity went down a storm. But the highlight was surely comedian Dave Spikey, as many may know as Peter Kay’s number 2 in phoenix nights. He only did about 30 minutes but crammed in some cracking jokes and although I wasn’t planning on visiting Wigan anytime soon, apparently by saying “gimme 6” when greeting the locals there you will be assured of a warm welcome.

Allegedly a number of indiscreet tonsil hockey sessions were witnessed as a few well oiled people took goodwill in the workplace a bit far and there were reports of a good old fashioned punch up over at the Dover Street wine bar where a few of the more tired and emotional among us adjourned for some late night dancing.

Speaking of which there were some truly memorable sights to be seen on the Grosvenor House dance floor where we took dancing like your dad to a whole new level. It’s always difficult when the guy to girl ratio is about 3 to 1 and quite often only blokes were left dancing together around abandoned handbags.

That was fine (sort of) except the awkward participants didn’t even attempt to look embarrassed about it. As for embarrassment, well, we won’t mention the very senior executive who was “unwell” down his shirt and had to be helped from the venue…must have been something he ate.

On a more serious note though the awards are a good excuse for hardworking car dealers to let their hair down and celebrate some fantastic achievements so congratulations to Motor Trader for putting on a great night with excellent food and entertainment.

Let’s hope that the motor trade can remain profitable this year because at £21 for a g&t and small glass of chardonnay they’ll need to!
