Car Makers Premier League November 2012

It’s time once more for the Car Makers Premier League where each and every month we examine the top 20 manufacturers by number of units registered and see just how they look when compared with the previous month. At the end of the year who will be crowned champion? Who will drop out of the top 20 as the year unfolds and which high achievers will be promoted?

We carry on the season with November’s statistics (based on the SMMT new car registration figures for November 2012) and they are up a surprising 11.3% on last November (which was sown 4.2% on the previous year), with an increase of 15,164 units to 149,191 new 62 plate cars registered for the month. However with pre-registration still very prevalent in the trade at the moment we need to take this with more than a moderate sized pinch of salt.

November is still a bit “after the Lord Mayor’s show” but an 11.3% rise is still very good and likely to have been very well received. So with that in mind let’s take a more detailed look at which manufacturers have improved and the ones that need to go to their rooms and have a long hard think about what they have (or still haven’t) done.

This month the top 10 positions all outperformed the market and only 3 manufacturers (Renault – of course –Honda and Volvo) failed to improve on last November.

The top 3 of Hyundai (up from 3rd last month with a massive 63.9% increase on the same time last year) Skoda (slipping one place to second in the table with a fantastic 40.1% improvement on last year) and Kia up from 10th with an equally impressive 40.1% improvement and just over 1,000 more units registered.

The biggest climbers this month, apart from the aforementioned Kia, are Vauxhall up 8 places to 4th with an impressive 23.3% improvement, and Toyota also jumping 8 places into 7th with a creditable 19.3% increase.

The top 20 stays the same this month with no one leaving or joining which certainly doesn’t happen very often, a sign of stability or a statistical quirk?

The biggest fallers are Volvo dropping a whopping 16 places from the dizzy heights of second all the way down to the relegation zone with a somewhat disappointing 1.2% decrease in registrations on November last year and MINI dropping 11 places from 6th to 17th with a miniscule (pardon the pun) 0.3% increase.
Biggest top 20 unit shifter this month was once again Ford (moving up 5 places to 8th with a 16.9% increase on November 2011) with 18,101 cars registered for the month (16.9% of the top 20 total).
Behind as usual are the aforementioned Vauxhall with 14,807 units (13.4% of the total) and in third VW (dropping 2 places to 16th with a very slender .05% increase) with 13,176 (11.7% of the total).

Renault are still firmly rooted to the foot of the table it would seem after November sees them recording another awful result declining 19.4% and now sign of the decline bottoming out – it is however worth repeating once again the clarification with regards to Renault’s position; Renault’s UK Communications Director Jeremy Townsend told us “Our results are in line with our expectations and forecasts. At the start of the year, we launched our renew plan with the aim of returning to profit in the UK. This involved simplifying our product line up, removing unprofitable sales channels (reducing Motability, short term rental etc.), reducing the size of our dealer network and reducing our marketing expenses. Therefore, it is expected that our share for the rest of the year will show a similar decline versus last year.”

The SMMT are naturally very positive about the strong November figures “New car registrations rose 11.3% in November, positioning the UK new car market as the second largest in Europe,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “The upward trend has been driven by private retail customers. The outlook for 2013 remains challenging, but vehicle manufacturers and their dealers will continue to work hard to attract motorists to their showrooms and deliver outstanding value.”

However with continuing reports of forced registrations all may not be as it at first appears and maybe even more caution should be attached when taking the seemingly positive results at first value.
