Inside the 2012 Motor Trade Awards

The annual motor trader awards on Wednesday was very well attended as always, so much so in fact it felt a little more like being at a rave for penguins such was the din and the uniform black and white tuxedo’s. The glitz and glamour unfortunately was not matched by the awards themselves and if there’s one thing we didn’t need to come to the … [Read more...]

What’s in a name?

Naming your car seems to be associated with girls rather than boys but I have to admit that, with all the new models on the road today seemingly designed by the same computer program, they all seem to merge into one. It sort of makes me hanker for the old days when I had to get underneath my mk 3 Cortina and bang the starter motor with a ball … [Read more...]

All the usual war stories at the annual veteran motor traders curry night

The recent annual curry night for motor trade veterans (from a certain era) went down a storm and, as usual, the wine and the banter were flowing in equal measures. Naturally we all had our say on the state of the nation whilst at the same time brushing off a few of the old stories that have been told many times before. These stories still raise a … [Read more...]

“Super” Mario and a new car nightmare

In order to try and cheer up our large reader base in these times of austerity, I have been reminiscing with old colleagues from way back when in the hope that they can re-count some amusing tales from the past. In this case I believe I have found a true story which will either make you laugh or make you cry. It was way back in the mid 90’s and … [Read more...]

Test driving Miss Daisy

There is always a story to tell in the car business and sometimes they are scarcely believable. This one involves the usual protagonists; the salesman and the customer. The salesman is still active in the business and knows how MTI reaches out to the masses and therefore despite my plea that people would be sympathetic I cannot mention his name or … [Read more...]

Top 10 silly little cars

The dictionary defines “silly” as weak-minded or lacking good sense; stupid foolish or absurd; ridiculous; irrational: a silly idea, foolish, feeble-minded, simple and pitiful. We occasionally see the odd car on our travels up and down the various motorways of this country which make us think “that’s a silly looking car if ever I saw one” (or words … [Read more...]

Whatever were they thinking?

Well it’s finally happened; I have seen a car that’s even uglier than the Fiat Multipla. No way! I hear you cry, Yes way! I retort and then some. I was driving up the m6 after a long meeting with some contributors when I glanced across the inside lane, wondering why there appeared to be a queue of traffic forming, when I saw this thing in all … [Read more...]

Stereotype - a commonly held public belief about specific social groups, or types of individuals The world is filled with clichés and stereotypes and the world of motor cars and their drivers is, of course, no exception. In an attempt to find a little slice of weekend fun we did a straw poll in the offices of MTI and came up with our own list of … [Read more...]

Holiday car rentals – the good, the bad and the ugly

My first memory of a holiday hire car was at the tender age of five when the family trip our villa in Menorca ended up with all of us piling into a Fiat 126, after a hot flight in an Iberia Tri-Star for four hours. I distinctly … [Read more...]

The ASBO car top 10

I was in the high street shopping with my wife recently when in the distance I heard a distinct “doompf, doompf, doompf” sound emanating from what appeared to be an almost unrecognizable Citroen Saxo containing four pasty faced youths. I observed this badly modified Saxo and its unpleasant cargo driving around and around the area and cropping up on … [Read more...]

Top 10 inappropriate cars for very old people

Last weekend I was sitting at the traffic lights, in my Honda Civic Hybrid minding my own business when I noticed out of the corner of my eye a gigantic Hummer H2 heave into view and pull up alongside me. Nothing too much out of the ordinary there I suppose, apart from the fact that you perhaps don’t see too many of them on the UK roads, except … [Read more...]
