Oil burners no longer VFM?

THE difference in price between petrol and diesel means buyers can no longer assume that oil-burners offer better value for money.

That's the findings of Parkers, the independent used car value experts.

"With diesel fuel around 12p a litre dearer, and a greater number of diesel cars on the used market shrinking resale values, drivers really do need to be covering a high mileage to justify the extra costs," said the company.

However, Parkers acknowledge that while current high fuel prices and the "credit crunch" mean tough times for those selling cars, it means there are some excellent bargains about for those looking to buy.

In the small car segment, they cite the Kia Picanto as among the best buys.

But plummeting SUV prices have also thrown up some really great deals.

"We found several pre-registered Jeep Patriot 2.4- litre Sport petrol models advertised at £11,350.

"With metallic paint included, this price represents a saving of £5000 on the list price."
