UK car production up in September

Posted on October 22nd, 2008 by In51der in Manufacturers, News

A report on AM-Online today regarding the increase in vehicle production figures for the UK. On the surface it seems encouraging but we are starting to hear of manufacturing now cutting production at some plants. October’s figures may not be so good.

UK car production was up in September by 2.4% to 142,606 units and 4.2% year-to-date.

Paul Everitt, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive, said: “UK production continues to demonstrate its strength and resilience with output up 2.5% overall in September.

“We already know that production is being scaled back to reflect demand in global markets and we will see this more clearly in the months ahead.”

Everitt said it was essential that the Government works with the industry to protect vital manufacturing capability.

He said: “This includes measures to support domestic demand and sustain longer-term investment in skills and new technology.”

Commercial vehicle production was up 3.6% to 20,675 units in September and 10.% year-to-date.

Passenger car export numbers were also up 5.6% in September and 5.3% year-to-date.
