What a difference a year makes – car production 59% down

As we all know car production is down because of falling demand and confirming the worst the SMMT have just announced the car production figures for February. The SMMT report reveals that over 300,000 units have been lost from total vehicle output in the past 14 months.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive said; “The large fall in February’s vehicle production is a direct result of weak demand and the need to protect the highly-skilled workforce and valuable industrial capability in the UK automotive sector.” He went on to once again call for the current panacea for all the motor industry ills, the “scrappage scheme”...
“We have seen action to encourage longer-term investment, but still require government support for short-time working, easier access to finance and credit and the implementation of a vehicle scrappage scheme.”
What a difference a year makes; 59% down on the same period last year and it really is staggering when you stop and think about just how bad things have got so quickly. This is what Mr Everitt had to say a year ago;
“UK automotive manufacturing is in good health with strong model line-ups and a highly productive and skilled work force. The success of UK manufacturing provides important balance to the economy and helps to underpin core service sectors.”
Makes you think doesn’t it?
