Spanish new car registrations down 38 percent in May

Posted on June 5th, 2009 by News in Manufacturers, News

Spanish car sales have fallen for the 13th consecutive month in May, but the 38 percent drop to 71,161 was slightly lower than that seen in previous months. When compared with a 45.6 percent drop in April it is seen as an easing in the decline and May, along with March, which also fell 38.7 percent, has had the smallest fall since September, when sales were down 32 percent.

The Spanish government launched a 2,000 euro purchase-price subsidy for buyers who scrap older cars in early May, but has yet to see any upturn in sales filter through to the figures. Industry and government officials are optimistic, however that an increase in sales is coming.
