The latest Manufacturer Reliability Index carried out by Warranty Direct has discovered that five of the top six reliable cars in Britain are Japanese and of those three are manufactured in the UK.
The survey, which estimates the most dependable used cars among 250 popular models, listed Honda, which has its plant in Wiltshire, as the most reliable. Third was Derby-based Toyota and sixth in the list was Nissan, which has a factory in Sunderland.
The research found that Honda buyers can drive with peace of mind knowing that there is only a 10 per cent chance of a breakdown, when the car is between three and six years old.
Japanese companies Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi were also high in the index.
Reacting on the excellent results for Honda, spokesman Steve Kirk said: “We’re delighted to be top of the tree. It’s testament to our great workers at places like Swindon.”
At the other end of the scale, Porsches are the most expensive to repair (no surprises there), with an average cost of £793.05. Jeep is next on £541, while Jaguar, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Chrysler are all in the £450-£485 range.
The least reliable brand in the Index is Land Rover, with a breakdown rate of 46.74%. No other manufacturer comes near to this, though Renault (more bad news for the troubled French car maker), Saab and Jeep are closest with figures of over 35%.
