JAPANESE-BUILT cars have taken five of the top ten places in a survey of Britain's most popular models but, quelle surprise, the poll of 77,000 motorists by Which? Car made dismal reading for French manufacturers as six of the ten least popular models were French made.
Topping the customer satisfaction survey was, somewhat surprisingly not a Japanese car but one from Germany. The Audi A5 achieved a score of 97 per cent, courtesy of its looks and performance, according to owners. However, experts have warned the initial lure of the A5 may fade unless reliability issues were tackled.
The Japanese cars soon make an appearance and those praised by their owners included the current Mazda MX-5, which came third and hot on the heels of the Audi with a customer satisfaction score of 96 per cent.
The Mazda MX-5 was followed by the previous model of the same car, placed fifth with an identical score; the Honda Jazz, with a score of 95 per cent; the Toyota Yaris Verso in seventh, also on 95 per cent; and a previous version of the Honda Jazz, with 94 per cent.
Bottom of the list of least popular cars was the Renault Espace, with a score of just 57 per cent.
Three other Renaults, a Peugeot and a Citroën were also in the bottom ten. Owners of other Renaults were not terribly impressed. The Mégane is described as "a pile of rubbish"; the Laguna as "an impulse buy… regretted ever since"; and the Espace as a "fantastic car, if only it would work for longer than a month at a time."
Richard Headland, the editor of Which? Car, said: "It's no surprise that owners love their Japanese cars, they are reliable, reasonably priced and cheap to run."
The satisfaction survey used the ratings of 77,000 Which? members, who gave data on 84,119 cars up to eight years old.
