Toyota recall 2.3 million cars in the US

A problem with sticking accelerator pedals have forced Toyota into recalling 2.3 million cars in the US and it is the latest in a string of recalls the firm has had to announce.

Company spokesman Brian Lyons said the move was due to the vehicles’ pedal mechanism becoming worn and, in some cases, getting stuck. The models affected by the latest recall include the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra, and the 2008-2010 Sequioia. It is not yet known if the recall will affect Toyota cars in other countries.

Toyota confirmed that accelerator pedals in the affected cars could “in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position”.

Back in October, Toyota recalled 4.2 million cars in the US due to pedals getting lodged under floor mats but said the latest problem was a separate issue to the loose floor mats, and that particular recall of affected vehicles is continuing.

In August of last year, Toyota recalled 690,000 cars in China due to faulty electrical window switches.
