According to a new poll of 1,000 motorists carried out by car supermarket Motorpoint has revealed 93 percent of car buyers would think twice about buying a new car because of the forthcoming 'Showroom Tax'.
From April 1st new car owners will be subject to a one-off first-year charge on top of their usual VED. Based on a car's CO2 emission, the new tax could add anything between £70 and £515 to the cost of taxing a vehicle.
Motorpoint says it expects to see sales of nearly new models rise sharply from April onwards as motorists look to avoid paying the surcharge.
David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint said:
"The Showroom Tax is clearly going to have a negative effective on consumer confidence over the coming weeks and months as drivers think twice about buying new. Therefore, I would urge buyers to consider nearly new as an alternative as they will enjoy all the benefits of a new car - just without the extra costs associated with getting their vehicle onto the road."
