Buy your used car in July

As comparisons are being made by some industry commentators to last year’s market, there are many in the trade who consider such comparisons unfounded. Such was the bounce back last year it is possible that we may never see a year like it again. Of course the scrappage scheme helped enormously and impacted greatly on a unique situation but … [Read more...]

Caution pays

caution-pays

When there is a recession in town, buyers look for bargains and cost savings across the board and especially so when buying cars. Unfortunately in their quest to find a cheap car people often overlook quality issues and the car can turn out to be not quite the cost saving it promised to be. For example with more private buyers visiting car … [Read more...]

Selling a car privately doesn’t have to be a hassle

Being in the trade for as long as I have means you really have heard it all before, the good, the bad and certainly the ugly. This … [Read more...]

Bargain of the Week – Ferrari 355

355

We've been on a small BOTW sabbatical recently but now the summer is pretty much here, we thought we'd kick it off with something a little bit special. We've already had one Ferrari grace our virtual forecourt in the shape of a Mondial but now we’ve chosen another, purely because it is one of the most desirable, and now almost affordable … [Read more...]

VAT and the Phew! factor

The recent emergency budget certainly didn’t seem as bad as it could have been for the motor trade. The VAT rise will of course hurt when it arrives as it affects both buyer and seller. Profit from car sales is subject to VAT but a small crumb of comfort is that at least it gives dealers the opportunity to re-plan budget forecasts with plenty of … [Read more...]

Car dealers slow to react as after-sales revenue declines

Franchised car dealers are becoming increasingly concerned about the likes of Kwik Fit and Halfords offering the £99 service. In their eyes the investment in training staff in the latest technological advances and the perception of value added customer service mean that having to compete on price alone is putting them at a disadvantage. … [Read more...]

Emergency budget may turn car buyers green

There is a growing feeling in the car retailing business that many more buyers will soon be looking to downgrade their cars into much more economical models. The long awaited lift off for eco-friendly, low emission cars could finally be about to gather pace. Many dealers are reporting an increase in customers looking to offload their gas … [Read more...]

Late plate ex-rentals can definitely be a wise choice

There was a time when car dealers used to try and conceal the fact that they sold ex-daily rental cars. They did this because there was a perception - sometimes real, often imagined - that these cars were somehow of a lower standard. It’s probably true that, given the choice, most car buyers would prefer that lower mileage 1 careful lady owner … [Read more...]

Has car retailing really changed all that much?

Regular contributor “Serman” begins a series of articles on his time in the trade and the changes (or lack of) that he has witnessed during his time.... I've been in the motor trade nearly twenty years now and having decided quite early on to see out a career in the industry, I have to admit that things haven't really moved on a great deal. … [Read more...]

Uk car production leaped 54% in May and 62% over the year-to-date, according to new figures from the SMMT. Sticking to effective advertising in a downturn

We car dealers when we get together like to chew the fat - well generally moan about most things to be more exact - and in a conversation during a lull in proceedings at auction this week, we heard of a small trader who has always absolutely sworn by advertising on Auto Trader. So much so that he wouldn’t bother using any other way to advertise … [Read more...]

EU new car market drops back further in May

Sales of new cars in the EU dropped 9.3% in May as the effects of government assistance for the automotive industry slipped away and the economic environment remained challenging, according to industry association ACEA. Could an austere post scrappage world be too much for a fragile automotive industry

The austerity measures about to be undertaken by the new coalition government could have a dramatic effect on car sales in this country. We have already seen showroom footfall decline by up to 40% year on year in some dealers and the worry clearly is that if VAT rises and the other stealth taxes kick in then the effects could be … [Read more...]

Car buyers still making the same old mistakes

Cars are the biggest purchase that people are likely to make outside of a house, and for that reason alone car buying should be a serious business. Car dealers need to understand how confusing it can sometimes be for customers to arrive at the right decision when the salesperson attempts to demonstrate their own particular selection of cars in … [Read more...]

Is the net closing in on car showrooms?

Some car dealers believe the internet is now so powerful that showrooms may become obsolete in years to come. With the constant improvement in technology and image quality, not to mention the comprehensive information which can be posted online, the only thing which won’t be covered is the test drive and I wouldn’t be surprised if the car … [Read more...]

Price wars on the horizon as car buyers become scarce

You know what? People tend to look closer at the condition of a car when times are quieter. Who knows why that should be but it definitely happens. Maybe it’s because there aren’t so many people around and the car buyer feels they can take more time. Maybe they have a sense that as a potential customer they are a rare breed and are deserving of … [Read more...]
