Whatever were they thinking?

Hideous

Well it’s finally happened; I have seen a car that’s even uglier than the Fiat Multipla. No way! I hear you cry, Yes way! I retort and then some. I was driving up the m6 after a long meeting with some contributors when I glanced across the inside lane, wondering why there appeared to be a queue of traffic forming, when I saw this thing in … [Read more...]

The scrappage scheme has ended, get over it

Dealers are really feeling the effect of the end of scrappage. The good times certainly rolled whilst the scheme was in place to the extent that many dealers would be excused for thinking that the recession was happening somewhere else. Those good times have long since passed but it seems many sales execs just haven’t switched on to the fact … [Read more...]

Social media and the automotive industry – the genie’s out of the bottle

It appears that the motor trade is somewhat slower than other business sectors to take advantage of social media, thinking that perhaps it is something for the “youth” and not really seeing the benefits to their business. They are, it seems also frightened of the potential for bad publicity should they let the genie escape from the bottle. … [Read more...]

The shape of things to come part 134

Marketing used cars has reached an exciting new stage, as the internet paves the way for more advanced classified ads; we are now seeing the images come to life in the form of a fully fledged car review on video accompanying the main advert. If you go any of Inchcape’s Volkswagen homepages and click on used cars (example here) they have … [Read more...]

What a difference a year makes

This time in 2009 dealers were gearing up for a successful new car month in September, mostly inflated it has to be said by scrappage. Fast forward to August 2010 and the order banks are as capacious as pair of space hoppers at present, with many dealers realising just how much impact scrappage had on ensuring a buoyant new reg month happened … [Read more...]

Just blame the weather

The school summer holidays are officially here and traditionally it can be a mixed bag for the trade. If the sun is shining customers head off to the sun in the UK, if not they head off abroad. We are great in the car business at talking the job down at any instance and the weather is perfect for this; too hot and we are all having barbecues, too … [Read more...]

The shape of things to come in car retailing?

Innovation and technological development are always at the forefront of a constantly evolving car industry. As a business we are always looking at ways of improving the products and the way in which we market them in order to engage with customers in an ever changing world. Since the internet has started to take such a lead role in virtually … [Read more...]

If you always do what you have always done you will always get the same results

Someone once said 'if you always do what you have always done you will always get the same results' (it was American success coach Tony Robbins - ed) and this is probably more relevant in the motor trade than any other business. Despite numerous attempts to evolve and change, if you ask veterans in the trade many will still say “we have always … [Read more...]

The encouraging result was driven by a turnaround at its car components division, which … [Read more...]

We’re not doomed….

The auctions, like the proverbial rubber ball, always come bouncing back. After weeks of the oversupply of high mileage basic and distinctly uninspiring ex-fleet cars clogging up the sales, the word on the street is that buyers are getting their debit cards out and conversions are on the way back up. It appears that after the shock of the … [Read more...]

Fewer new cars being bought means a heating up of demand in the used car market

As the new car parc has steadily shrunk over the last couple of years, the knock on effect and simple mathematics means there are likely to be fewer 2-3 year old cars around. It was a prevailing condition following the recession of the early 90’s and it is a situation that is likely to be repeated over the next few years. For example the 2.1 … [Read more...]

Car dealer finance still being overlooked

In conversation with a long established car dealer recently, he passed on to me his exasperation with the fact that many customers seem to be difficult to engage with about finance and monthly payments. He mentioned that statistically it is reckoned that 60% of car buyers believe car dealer finance to be more expensive than high street … [Read more...]

Bargain of the Week – Land Rover Discovery

botw-disco

I've been writing Bargain of The Week for a while now and for the very first time it's my turn to spend the cash on a new car. Although road tax, fuel and general running costs are still rising, I'm in the market for a new car and as much as it doesn't make sense, I can't bring myself to sell my daily-drive. A new business venture beckons and I … [Read more...]

Fun, indiscretion and “dad dancing” at the Motor Trader Awards

The Motor Trader awards were attended by a couple of our insiders on Wednesday night, and it certainly seems a good night was had by almost all. The sound of ssshing became quite tiresome as Ray Stubbs tried manfully to control a fairly good natured but large and pretty inebriated crowd. The awards were handed out like confetti and the people … [Read more...]

VAT’ll do nicely!

It is widely believed that the increase in VAT from January 11th will stimulate new car sales in the second half of 2010 and that the industry will welcome an increase in sales during the traditionally quieter periods. However some believe that car buyers will merely be bringing forward their purchase decision leaving a hole in the overall … [Read more...]

Glass’s guide predicts used car prices will stick to seasonal norms for remainder of 2010

Fresh analysis by Glass's indicates that used car prices in the 2nd half of this year should generally stick to the seasonal norm, despite the possibly harmful elements of current economic uncertainty and probability of even more reduction in retail demand. Glass's forecasts that monthly price changes for the rest of 2010 will be only marginally … [Read more...]

Running an ageing car can increase the running costs and Post Office Car Insurance research has also found that … [Read more...]

Does he take sugar?

I remember my old granddad telling me some years ago about a time when he had fallen and damaged a hip and was being pushed down the road by my dad in his wheelchair. They decided to stop at a coffee shop for a brew and a cake, the assistant looking directly at my dad asked, when she had poured their tea, 'does he take sugar'? At that point my … [Read more...]
