Top 10 silly little cars

The dictionary defines “silly” as weak-minded or lacking good sense; stupid foolish or absurd; ridiculous; irrational: a silly idea, foolish, feeble-minded, simple and pitiful. We occasionally see the odd car on our travels up and down the various motorways of this country which make us think “that’s a silly looking car if ever I saw one” (or words to that effect). Now with new obscure varieties of electrical cars coming to the market seemingly every week we thought it might be high time to draw up a list of the “silliest” little vehicles ever to grace our highways.

reliant robin

Reliant Robin
It may be silly but at least it’s British. Not only that but you don’t need a full licence to drive one (not that you’d want to). According to Wikipedia a Reliant Robin was featured in Dutch rock combo Golden Earring's video of "Radar Love." So.. er.. it must be cool then?

bond bug

Bond Bug
Based on the equally silly Reliant Regal the 29 bhp 700cc Bond Bug only came in orange and went as fast as 78mph all of which makes it extremely silly.

kr200

Messerschmitt KR200
The good old “Bubble Car” sillier than a wagon load of monkeys the Messerschmitt KR200 or to give it it’s strangely less silly German name Kabinenroller (Cabin Scooter), was a three-wheeler designed by the aircraft engineer Fritz Fend and produced in the factory of the German aircraft manufacturer Messerscmitt from 1955 to 1964. Is considered an icon by many but is still rather silly.

g-wiz

G-Wiz
A small and extremely silly little electric car built by Indian manufacturer REVA. We say “car” but in some countries it doesn’t even classify as such, being a “Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle” or NEV (alright Nev, how’s it going?!) in the USA and a “Heavy Quadricycle” in parts of Europe. It measures 2.6 metres in length and 1.3 metres wide and has a top speed of 50mph

tango

Tango
The Tango is an “ulta narrow” electric sports car built by American company Commuter Cars. It weighs about the same as a packet of polo mints but does 0-60mph in 4 seconds has a top speed of 150mph and looks like an only slightly modified bobsleigh. All of which takes it to new heights of silliness.

crossblade

Smart Crossblade
This 2002 LE version of the Fortwo cabrio was a “roadster” without a windscreen, roof or even conventional doors. It resembles a car that has been recovered from an RTA after the Fire Service and their joyfully named “jaws of life” had been at it. Very silly.

500

Fiat 500 Vignale
A car straight out of Toy town. OK if you're Noddy or indeed Big Ears but if you’re anyone else just plain silly. Probably deemed by some to be a great icon, they are probably wrong.

figaro

Nissan Figaro
First introduced by Nissan under the slogan “back to the future” in 1989 the retro looking Figaro has quite a fan base. People who get up early on a Sunday will know this “car” from the opening credits of the Andrew Marr show on BBC1. Whether this car is silly because it is being driven by Andrew Marr - who does indeed look silly driving it - or it is just plain silly in its own right we’re not quite sure.

p50

Peel P50
Strictly speaking the Peel P50 was more ridiculous than silly but it does make it on to the list. The P50 has the honour(?) of being the smallest production car ever made. Launched in 1962 it had a 49cc engine and reached a top speed of 38 mph but the company making them ceased trading in the 1970’s. Now it’s back in production thanks to investment from BBC’s Dragons Den entrepreneur James Caan and the only real question to ask the people behind the project is a resounding why?

mopetta

Brütsch Mopetta
Saving the silliest to last we present to you the 50 cc Mopetta designed by Egon Brutsch. The Mopetta was only 67 inches long and although Opel were in negotiations to distribute it, sadly(?) it never went into mass production and only 14 were ever built. On second thoughts this one perhaps goes beyond silly.

Honourable mentions to the Daewoo/Chevrolet Matiz, the Daihatsu Hijet, the Reyonnah, the Teilhol and the Tazzari.

Thanks to: @Carfolio @antonyingram @richardaucock for their suggestions.

Clearly a website for Top Gear watching cretins.

    4. Lisa Hernandez says:

Shame on you “Em Free” “Cretin” is an ableist word. It is a word which shouldn’t be used by people who consider themselves allies to people with disabilities. By using such a word you have just made yourself appear far, far worse than the people you set out to ridicule with your glib one liner. I don’t blame you I just think you have been poorly educated perhaps? Maybe you have a low income and have become bitter towards the world? Never mind it is never too late to change :-)

      The Mopetta is superb…
