It’s time once more for the Car Makers Premier League where each and every month we examine the top 20 manufacturers by number of units registered and see just how they look when compared with the previous month. At the end of the year who will be crowned champion? Who will drop out of the top 20 as the year unfolds and which high achievers will be promoted?
June’s statistics (based on the SMMT figures for UK new car registrations in June 2011) revealed that 183,125 new 11-plate cars were registered in the month, a decline of 6.2% (12,101 units) on June 2010. The market is 7.1% down over the first half of this year but Paul Everitt SMMT Chief Executive remains upbeat “June new car registrations continued to perform in line with industry expectations with robust demand in the fleet sector and a relatively weak retail market.”
In June 2010 the market, still only slightly impacted by scrappage registrations (0.7% of registrations to be exact or 1,290 units), recorded a 10.8% increase on the previous year to 195,226 units.
Overall only the top 11 positions outperformed the market this month with Seat back at number 1 (a very impressive 32% up on June 2010). Next come Hyundai and Kia in what resembles a return to the far off heady days of scrappage when their particular brand of metal was flying out the showroom doors. Hyundai are up to 2nd from 13th with a 29% increase on last year and Kia up into 3rd from 14th with a 22% gain on June 2010 (thanks mostly to the IX35 and the Sportage). Hyundai themselves explain their good showing this month as being down to their competitive product offering and warranty package. Hyundai has had a consistent market share of 3% all year, which is significantly above their historical average and is demonstrated in June's results. Previously this year, Hyundai's results were being compared against 2010 sales including the final Scrappage registrations. In June, however, Hyundai is witnessing pure like for like sales without the Scrappage distortion.This has upset the apple cart in the Premier league with regards to the recent dominance of German owned manufactures with MINI slipping to 4th from 1st. Yet despite the Korean interlopers nestling in at 2nd and 3rd the German owned brands still dominate the top 10 securing 7 of the top positions. Ford are clearly the steady Eddie’s, firmly ensconced in 9th position.
This month it’s a big welcome back to Mazda who feature again, this time in 16th position who despite a drop of 17% on last June still shifted enough units to put them in the top 20 (3,362).
Very bad news this month for Leaf peddlers Nissan who drop an alarming 12 places from 3rd in May to 15th this month with a worrying 16% decline on June 2010. This month it’s a big drop too for Vauxhall slipping back from 7th in May to 18th in June with a 22% reverse.
Bottom this month once again are new whipping boys Honda with a terrible 47% decline on last year.
According to the SMMT “The balance of demand makes this a tough time for vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks.” Or in other words it’s squeaky bum time.
