fla-august-2010

Sales of used cars using dealer finance rose by 21% in August when compared to the same month last year, according to the latest motor finance statistics from the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA). However, sales of new cars to consumers and businesses using motor finance were down by 12% and 26% respectively. August is always a quiet month … [Read more...]

Credit where credit is due

Although showroom footfall is a little light for the time of year, some car dealers are still reporting brisk trade. Others are saying that they are fighting for every deal and many customers will just not commit and more of the ones that do either want a lot more for their old car or too much off the new one. There are also some wider parallels … [Read more...]

Draft dodgers

For those of you who thought bankers drafts were as good as cash, think again. It takes up to 5 days for a BD to clear and if it is stolen or a forgery your car can be long gone before the bank or you realise leaving you with no car and no money. In that case what is the point of a bankers draft over a cheque? … [Read more...]

Happy staff equals happy customers

There is much talk at present about how the retail car sales business can improve the service it delivers to its customers. As a result a greater emphasis than perhaps ever before is being put on training and coaching staff to be better equipped to offer an enhanced experience whilst at the same time draw satisfaction from the process. The buzz … [Read more...]

Just blame the weather

The school summer holidays are officially here and traditionally it can be a mixed bag for the trade. If the sun is shining customers head off to the sun in the UK, if not they head off abroad. We are great in the car business at talking the job down at any instance and the weather is perfect for this; too hot and we are all having barbecues, too … [Read more...]

Car dealer finance still being overlooked

In conversation with a long established car dealer recently, he passed on to me his exasperation with the fact that many customers seem to be difficult to engage with about finance and monthly payments. He mentioned that statistically it is reckoned that 60% of car buyers believe car dealer finance to be more expensive than high street … [Read more...]

VAT and the Phew! factor

The recent emergency budget certainly didn’t seem as bad as it could have been for the motor trade. The VAT rise will of course hurt when it arrives as it affects both buyer and seller. Profit from car sales is subject to VAT but a small crumb of comfort is that at least it gives dealers the opportunity to re-plan budget forecasts with plenty of … [Read more...]

Car buyers may be at risk of committing finance fraud

By providing bogus details in a finance application or selling a vehicle that has outstanding finance, car buyers may not realise they're committing a serious criminal offence. This was the warning from the Finance and Leasing Association (FLA), which has just released new statistics showing almost 2,500 fraudulent motor finance applications in the … [Read more...]

Service departments frightened of selling

It is a recognized fact that in the franchised dealer network the after sales departments have been underperforming for quite some time and are frequently seen as the weak link in dealer profitability. This is for a number of reasons. In a rampant sales department with expanding volumes customers become an after-sales captive audience and thus a … [Read more...]

Some dealers not obeying the law when it comes to car finance

Car dealers are taking buyers for a ride by not being crystal clear regarding exactly how much interest they are going to pay on a car, says Which? Car. The consumer magazine sent three researchers to 15 car showrooms throughout the UK belonging to 5 of the leading brands (Audi, Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall) in January 2010. The discussions … [Read more...]

Taking the temperature of the trade and fearing the budget

Prices at auction seem to be showing no sign of slowing as good quality low mileage cars remain scarce, and dealers are already feeling the effects of the end of scrappage and wondering how they will fill the gap. Buyers need to look carefully over the coming weeks and months for manufacturers offering their dealers incentives to shift more … [Read more...]

Business is brisk as car buyers emerge from the cold

At last we are getting reports that trade is becoming brisk again, deals are being done and buyers, fed up with talking about the cold, are finding comfort in the warm inviting showrooms where the nice people there talk to them about cars. Interestingly many dealers are telling us that the business is being spread over the course of the week, … [Read more...]

Oversell the add-ons and something is going to crack

We often highlight at Motor Trade Insider the fact that the actual selling of a car is only a very small part of how the modern car dealer attempts to gain a profit and apart from the aftersales route and traditional finance packages there are now masses of products which can be sold as 'bolt ons' but which can easily make the whole transaction … [Read more...]

Manufacturers and dealers roll up their sleeves for a tough year ahead

There is a lot of positive sentiment at present amid the usual new year pessimism and the motor trade in general is hoping that market leading finance packages will provide the springboard to success in 2010. With the scrappage scheme nearly at an end and the other well documented issues set to push up new car prices, you can be sure … [Read more...]

2009 and the year ahead

As 2009 draws to a close and we reflect on a tumultuous year it’s fair to say the ups and downs have been quite staggering. What, at the start of the year, was predicted to be the very worst of years, for many car dealers and some up and coming car makers (Kia, Hyundai etc) has actually been pretty good. As we look back on some of MTI's … [Read more...]

Finance the key for many smaller dealers

If you ask anyone’s opinion on almost anything they will generally start by looking at the subject of conversation totally from their own perspective. However once you ask them to look at the bigger picture they will invariably soften their stance and concede that maybe there is a different way of looking at things. In the motor trade, like many … [Read more...]

Can we expect some innovative marketing this festive period?

Most car dealers are busily erecting their Christmas trees, dressing the showroom and gearing up for the festive season. In years gone by you could virtually write off December, but recently that trend has changed dramatically. Of course as with any seasonal downturn the fact that prospective customers are in the throes of fighting over the … [Read more...]

Some motorists are deferring routine car maintenance

Consumers are responding to rises in motoring costs and challenging economic conditions by deferring routine vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance jobs, according to a survey carried out this month on www.glass.co.uk - the Glass's Guide used car valuation website. Findings from the survey revealed that almost half (46 per cent) have deferred … [Read more...]

The future looks less profitable for dealers

Unfortunately there are several factors which point towards car dealers experiencing a challenging time next year and we have already pointed out why, apart from the end of scrappage, dealers will find it harder going. The fact that, despite this year being better than expected, there have still been twice the amount of closures than this time … [Read more...]

Precious metal – the car itself is just a vehicle for profit

As we have mentioned before the business manager is now arguably the most important member of the car dealership personnel, certainly when it comes to profit generation. If you have set foot in any car showrooms recently then you will, no doubt, be familiar with the extensive range of “add-on’s” available to the car buyer. There are … [Read more...]

Please do not ask for credit as refusal often offends

The shortage of consumer finance available to potential customers is really starting to hurt car dealers. The perceived success of the scrappage scheme (real or otherwise) and the general buoyancy of used car sales have papered over the cracks in an industry which is still in a lot of trouble. As we have previously pointed out the September new car … [Read more...]
