Car manufacturer predictions for 2011 may be unrealistic

2011

There is a genuine feeling among some dealers that bullish estimates from manufacturers about the size of the new car market in 2011 will ultimately be made up of too many forced registrations. One of the good things that came from the initial downturn was the realisation that having fields full of unsold cars was not really the answer and … [Read more...]

There is no doubting the scrappage scheme provided a welcome boost to the UK automotive industry at a time when it was most needed but, as we have recently highlighted, the long term effects for that short term shot in the arm may prove to be more far reaching than perhaps anyone in the industry anticipated. We have accepted the fact that the … [Read more...]

Wake up and smell the coffee

It’s a funny thing in the motor trade, customers are increasingly wondering why they are not getting the treatment they deserve for what is probably one of the largest financial investments they will ever make. Each week we hear of customers who are wandering around showrooms and no one is acknowledging their existence, let alone attempting to … [Read more...]

Land of the rising Nissan

There can be no argument that Japanese manufacturers, along with quite a few other manufacturers it has to be said, have taken a bit of a hammering in the UK during and post the credit crunch and subsequent recession. Almost to a man they have lost market share and seen the number of new cars registered each month drastically … [Read more...]

In the past here on MTI we have tended not to do too many car reviews. This was mainly because we thought the web was awash with them and our contributors preferred to voice their opinion about what they saw as other more pressing matters. Despite this the reviews we have done have all proved popular so we know there is an appetite for them. At … [Read more...]

Order takers stand aside – it’s time to get back to selling cars

As September approaches dealers are scratching their heads thinking about how to encourage sales, which have been affected by various events. Last year the scrappage scheme was in full flow and was being marketed very well by the government and for many dealers it basically led to a procession of what we in the trade call ‘hands up ‘ customers … [Read more...]

The scrappage scheme has ended, get over it

Dealers are really feeling the effect of the end of scrappage. The good times certainly rolled whilst the scheme was in place to the extent that many dealers would be excused for thinking that the recession was happening somewhere else. Those good times have long since passed but it seems many sales execs just haven’t switched on to the fact … [Read more...]

What a difference a year makes

This time in 2009 dealers were gearing up for a successful new car month in September, mostly inflated it has to be said by scrappage. Fast forward to August 2010 and the order banks are as capacious as pair of space hoppers at present, with many dealers realising just how much impact scrappage had on ensuring a buoyant new reg month happened … [Read more...]

VAT’ll do nicely!

It is widely believed that the increase in VAT from January 11th will stimulate new car sales in the second half of 2010 and that the industry will welcome an increase in sales during the traditionally quieter periods. However some believe that car buyers will merely be bringing forward their purchase decision leaving a hole in the overall … [Read more...]

Look out for VAT busting deals as car dealers turn negatives into positives

Believe it or not the effect of the VAT rise in January 2011 has actually left many car dealers feeling relived and excited. The fact that there is likely to be a last rush of buyers trying to beat the VAT increase will almost re-create the publicity that was around during the launch of scrappage. Although there will no doubt be some … [Read more...]

Buy your used car in July

As comparisons are being made by some industry commentators to last year’s market, there are many in the trade who consider such comparisons unfounded. Such was the bounce back last year it is possible that we may never see a year like it again. Of course the scrappage scheme helped enormously and impacted greatly on a unique situation but … [Read more...]

Could an austere post scrappage world be too much for a fragile automotive industry

The austerity measures about to be undertaken by the new coalition government could have a dramatic effect on car sales in this country. We have already seen showroom footfall decline by up to 40% year on year in some dealers and the worry clearly is that if VAT rises and the other stealth taxes kick in then the effects could be … [Read more...]

Car dealers get the jitters

Unfortunately the austerity measures currently being proposed will without doubt have a de-stabilising effect on the car market. We are hearing of large volumes of cars unsold at auctions, and prices in the region of 'cap below average'. Although most commentators predict this is a temporary measure given the long term fact that there will be a … [Read more...]

We’re all in this together aren’t we?

With an estimated £6billion in cuts forecast by the new coalition government, it is inevitable that the car trade will feel some aftershocks from these measures. Although the cuts are mainly directed at public services the knock on for normal everyday people often results in a lack of confidence and this lack of confidence often manifests itself … [Read more...]

Used car market so hard to call

Sometimes it is difficult to reach a common consensus of opinion, as the current political situation tells us and in the motor trade there has never really been a situation like we are experiencing right now, with so many differing opinions on how to call the market. For example some of our sources tell us that certain cars are going through … [Read more...]

Ford Europe has reported a pre-tax operating profit of $107 million, compared with a loss of $585 million a year ago. Overall, the U.S. car manufacturer posted net income of $2.1 billion in the first quarter, almost twice the figure projected by analysts. The increase was fuelled by a 37 percent rise in U.S. sales. The profit compared with … [Read more...]

Dilemma for car dealers

Although car dealers are at present relaxing with large cigars and a glasses of champagne having achieved record sales figures for Q1 (and this is despite January being a virtual white out) there are many in the trade that are predicting turbulence ahead albeit only temporary. Once buyers have got their heads around alternatives to scrappage and … [Read more...]

Don’t get undersold on your part-exchange post scrappage

Car showrooms can be strange places at the best of times, either like ghost towns with tumbleweed rolling through them or so busy that customers have to wait an hour just to make an enquiry! At present, post scrappage, there are plenty of customers looking at used cars but without the carrot of a genuine special offer, customers fearing that … [Read more...]
